Learners ► ABOUT
Imagine not being able to read this sentence, open a bank account, or find the right words to discuss an urgent problem with a doctor or your child’s teacher. Our adult learners struggle daily in these types of situations. We help adults improve their English so that they may overcome challenges like these.
Our learners are adult men and women of all ages, nationalities, and economic and social backgrounds. They are neighbors all around us – individuals we may see down the street, at work, at school, or at the local grocery store.
Many learners come to our program because they cannot succeed in traditional classroom settings. They may not have reliable transportation, may have to stay home with young children, or may feel uncomfortable because they have little schooling or a learning disability.
In our Adult Literacy Program, we pair trained volunteer literacy tutors to work with learners for 1 to 2 hours a week to help them learn to read, write, speak, and understand English better so that they may achieve their personal and professional goals.
