Our tutor training teaches people like you to help a neighbor learn how to read, write, speak, and understand English better. If you can give one to two hours a week, you can fit tutoring into your schedule and help one of the more than 400 adult learners who are waiting for a tutor.
While your student is learning to
you are learning what a difference you can make in his or her life.
We will train you to work with adult Basic Literacy learners and English as a Second Language (ESL) learners who need your help.
We provide 18 hours of training before matching you with a learner, and we will stay with you after training. When you need it, you will receive guidance and support from our staff and experienced tutors who are glad to share what they have learned.

Do I need to know another language?
You don’t need to speak a second language to be effective. You simply need to read, write, and speak English fluently.
Do I need to have a teaching background?
You don’t need a teaching background to successfully tutor and adult learner. Our 18-hour tutor training workshop will teach you everything you need to know.
What does the tutor training entail?
We will talk about how adult learners learn best. We will share how we assess and determine learners’ needs and goals. We will show you how to use everyday, practical materials to customize lesson plans. You will also meet the staff members who will support your efforts once you complete tutor training.
Is tutoring safe?
You meet with your adult learner at a mutually agreed upon time and place. Many tutors and learners meet at local libraries. It’s very safe.

Our staff is always available via phone or email and will regularly ask you for feedback. Your training can continue during quarterly in-service workshops offered on a variety of topics. Experienced tutors often share tips and tools, too.
