How the program works: Assessment, customization and support.

Learner assessment: The first step.

When learners join our program we evaluate their skill levels so tutors know where to start. Basic Literacy learners who read below a 9th grade level are eligible for the program, as are ESL learners who function at low language levels.

Learner programs: Customized to meet needs and goals.

Tutors develop individualized lessons based on evaluation results.  Innovative lesson plans, moral support and encouragement help learners read, write, speak, and understand English better so that they can take a more active part in the society in which they live and work.

Our main program is our Adult Literacy Program, which features one-on-one tutoring for Basic Literacy learners and English as a Second Language (ESL) learners. Based upon their English level and needs, learners may qualify for other programs.

Learner support: Encouragement that promotes independence.

Members of our staff communicate with learners to assess how they are doing and provide ongoing support and encouragement.

Learners may also participate in conversation groups, which give them a chance to practice English with others in a comfortable setting.

We review and report learning gains through the use of standardized testing, writing samples and documented achievement of practical life skills attained by learners.  Annual recognition events honor the successes and achievements of our tutors and learners.
