Become a tutor today: Be the difference in someone’s life.

Our tutor training teaches people like you to help a neighbor learn to read, write, speak and understand English better. If you can give one to two hours a week, you can fit tutoring into your schedule and help one of the more than 400 adult learners who are waiting for a tutor.

While your student is learning to

  • communicate with their doctor
  • fill out a job application
  • obtain their citizenship

you are learning what a difference you can make in his or her life.

Our tutor training: Helping you to feel comfortable.

We will train you to work with adult Basic Literacy learners or English as a Second Language (ESL) learners who need your help. We provide 18 hours of training before matching you with a learner, and we will stay with you after training. You will receive guidance and support when you need it, from our staff and experienced tutors who are glad to share what they have learned.

Maybe, like other potential tutors, you have some concerns. Here are answers to questions asked most often.

Do I need to know another language?

You don’t need to speak a second language to be effective. You simply need to read, write and speak English fluently.

Do I need to have a teaching background?

You don’t need a teaching background to successfully tutor an adult learner. Our 18-hour tutor training workshop will teach you everything you need to know.

What does the tutor training entail?

We will talk about how adult learners learn best. We will share how we assess and determine learners’ needs and goals.  We will show you how to use everyday, practical materials to customize lesson plans. You will also meet the staff members that will support your efforts once you complete tutor training.

Is tutoring safe?

You meet with your adult learner at a mutually agreed upon time and place. Many tutors and learners meet at local libraries. It’s very safe.

Look at our comprehensive Tutor FAQ section.

Support after your training: We’re here for you.

Our staff is always available via phone or email, and will regularly ask you for feedback. Your training can continue during quarterly in-service workshops offered on a variety of topics. Experienced tutors often share tips and tools, too.

Volunteer as a tutor: You’ll be amazed at the rewards.

You will feel satisfied knowing that you are helping another person’s life by giving them the skills they need to achieve independence.
